FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt was founded on 26 January 1966. Its origins date back to 1895. The two-time GDR champions and record winners of the TFV Cup finished 3rd in the last GDR Oberliga season in 1990/1991, which entitled them to qualify for the 2nd Bundesliga and participate in the UEFA Cup. The team was eliminated in the second round against the eventual winners, Ajax Amsterdam. The first direct promotion to the lower house of the Bundesliga was achieved in 2003/2004, but like in 1991/1992, this was only maintained for one year. National players such as Thomas Linke and Clemens Fritz emerged from the youth programme. FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt is the last club from the former GDR to play internationally.
